SOCIETY OF PARSON PAINTERS

1923 - 1959

The Society of Parson Painters was founded in 1923 by William Foxley Norris KCVO (4 February 1859–28 September 1937), Dean of York 1917-1925 and of Westminster from then until his death in 1937. The Lambeth Palace Library holds minutes of the Society 1923-1959 (Ms 2885). Their exhibition venues were in private houses until they used the Abbey Gallery in 1927 when the exhibitors included William Foxley Norris and Rev. Harry Ward, Canon of York, 1893-1934 and then exhibited at various galleries including Foyles Gallery in 1930. Suffolk artist who exhibited with the Society of Parson Painters include Arthur Henry Naunton Waller and Arthur Pretyman Waller.
