JAMES, Robert
Robert James was born at Kenton, Lincolnshire in 1809. When an artist of Pelham Street, Nottingham he married at St Peter's Church, Nottingham on 26 September 1837 Elizabeth Cooper, eldest daughter of John Cooper of Carlton, near Nottingham. In 1851, Robert was a 42-year-old portrait painter, living at Mount Street, St Nicholas, Nottingham with his 37-year-old wife Elizabeth, who was born in Nottingham and their five children, Herbert 12, Emma 10, Fanny 8, Marian 5 and newly born John, except Marian who was born in Leicester, were all born in Nottingham. James was a distinguished Nottingham portrait painter who exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 an oil 'Marbles' which he also exhibited at the Royal Academy, he also exhibited at the British Institution in 1841 'The Wanderer and his Friends'. Robert James, artist, died at his residence Mount Pleasant, Mount Street, Nottingham on 30 November 1853 in the 45th year of his age leaving a widow and children.
