BROMHEAD GALLERY

1926 - 1933

Bromhead Gallery at 19-20 Cork Street, London the premises began life as a purpose-built office premises for finance and assurance brokers Edward Howard in 1816. Between 1860 and 1900 the building passed into commercial operation and was occupied by a succession of silk importers, tailors, and woollen merchants. In 1926 the building was converted into an art gallery where the Bromhead Gallery opened the first gallery. Harold Watts Bromhead (1869-1943) was the secretary of the 'Art Journal' and of the Society of Graver-printmakers in Colour and in 1933 went on to found and was the first secretary and treasurer of the Streatham Antiquarian and Natural History Society and was the author of several books including 'The Heritage of St Leonard's Church' (1932) and 'Streatham's Beginnings' (1936). The gallery was succeeded in 1933 by the Mayor Gallery and latterly the premises housed the Redfern Gallery and until 2023 Browse & Darby. Suffolk artists who exhibited at the Bromhead Gallery include Phyllis Mary Pulling other exhibitors include Concord Morton (1911-1979)
