TONG, Vernon
Vernon Tong was born in Jamaica on 17 May 1932. At the age of three he went to China where he grew up and was educated, only returning to Jamaica in 1953. Vernon studied at the Jamaica School of Art and Crafts 1954-1955 and in 1956 he came to the UK and studied drawing and silkscreen printing at St Martin's School of Art 1956-1958. He married at Hampstead in 1960 Renata Regter (-2018) and they had three daughters and in 1965 they came to Suffolk living at Felixstowe and in 1988 he moved to Ripley, Derbyshire. During his time in Suffolk, he taught art at Adult Education Centres also painting and exhibiting his works. His work ranges from large abstract and figurative oils to watercolour landscapes of Suffolk which provide a documentary of Suffolk scenes around the Orwell and Deben estuaries and the surrounding countryside. He has exhibited his paintings in many group exhibitions and one-man shows in England, Jamaica, USA, and in Europe including with the Artists International Association, Hills Galleries, Jamaica; The Institute of Jamaica; John Peartree Gallery, Jamaica; Woodstock Gallery at 16 Woodstock Street, London; Liberty’s of London; Boheme Konsthandel, Sweden; Galerie Das Bild die Form, Essen; Yoxford Gallery, Suffolk and elsewhere. He signs his work 'Vernon Tong'.
