BENHAM, Thomas Charles Sirrell

1855 - 1932

Thomas Charles Sirrell Benham was born at Islington, London in 1855, second son of John Henry Benham (c1818-8 December 1900), a landed proprietor, and his wife [Mary] Ann Caroline Sirrell (1832-), only daughter of Thomas Charles Sirrell of Upper Holloway, who married at St Pancras Church, London on 21 February 1852. In 1871, Thomas was living at 12 Endsleigh Street, St Pancras with his parents, 53-year-old John and 35-year-old Ann and four siblings, John Henry 18, George Spelman 13, William Frederick 7 and daughter Jesse 5. In 1881, Thomas was an ‘artist fine art (painter)’ living at 344 Camden Road, Islington with his parents and family and was still there in 1891. In 1901, still at the same address as head of the household but by 1904 had moved to Walberswick, Suffolk. A painter of landscapes, portraits, sporting figures and flower subjects who exhibited at the Royal Academy also exhibiting at the Birmingham Royal Society of Artists; Dowdeswell Gallery; Grosvenor Gallery; Walker Art Gallery; Manchester City Art Gallery; Royal Society of Portrait Painters; Royal Hibernian Academy; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Arthur Tooth Gallery 1878-1922. In 1911, a 56-year-old unmarried artist living at ‘Rockcliffe’, Walberswick with a 57-year-old housekeeper, Jane Smith and, as Thomas Charles Syrrell Benham, he died at Walberswick on 28 December 1932, aged 77.
