NEWLYN ART GALLERY

1895 - ?

From the 1880s, Newlyn attracted a colony of artists, who came to be known as the Newlyn School. By the 1890s they wanted to create a gallery space in the village where the community of Newlyn, who were one of the key subjects of the artists’ work, could view the paintings created here. An approach was made to John Passmore Edwards (1823–1911) to finance the building of the gallery, on land gifted by the Le Grice family. Originally named the Passmore Edwards Gallery the Newlyn Art Gallery opened its doors in 1895. After presenting contemporary art there for more than 110 years, in 2007 they redeveloped the existing Newlyn site at New Road, Newlyn and acquired Penzance’s former telephone exchange at Princes Street, Penzance close to the town centre. This enabled them to expand their programme by providing new space to reflect the diversity of current artists’ practice in Cornwall. See also Penzance School of Art. Suffolk artists who exhibited at the Newlyn Art Gallery include Elinor Proby Adams and Alfred Hartley.
