COOK, Herbert Moxon

1844 - 1928

Herbert Moxon Cook was born at Solihull, Manchester in 1844 and baptised on 12 October 1844, second son of George Cook (27 August 1816-), a wool broker, who was born at Mendham, Suffolk and his wife Elizabeth. In 1851 Herbert was a 6-year-old living at Richmond Road, Saint John's Hackney, London with his parents 34-year-old George and 31-year-old Elizabeth and his sibling brothers 8-year-old Bernard and 4-year-old Miller, all born in Manchester, and they retained two indoor servants. In 1871 he was lodging at St James's Square, Manchester and was still living in Manchester in 1880 but in 1881 an unmarried portrait and landscape artist living at the Victoria Hotel, Bannatyne Street, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland but the following year was back in Manchester living at Meadow Street, Cheetham. Another trip to Scotland as in 1891 he was living at Hotel Kilbride, Brodick, Buteshire, Scotland. He married at St Giles, London in 1899 Emmeline Wood (1865-1907), who died in Ipswich. He made frequent visits to Scotland and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1859-1902 also exhibiting at the Woodbridge Fine Art Exhibition which opened on 19 June 1889 at the Bull Hotel Assembly Rooms and at the British Institution, the Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists and elsewhere. In 1921 an artist landscape painter and a widower living at 24 Dorset Street, Hulme, South Manchester. Herbert Moxon Cook died at 26 Dorset Street, Hulme, Manchester on 22 September 1928.
