STUDDERT, George Hampden de Clare
George Hampden de Clare Studdert was born at 25 Barrington Street, Limerick, Ireland in 1839, third child and only son of George Studdert of Glenwood and Kilnamona, late of the 4th Infantry, and his wife Jane Russell, daughter of Hughes Russell. Young George was admitted pensioner at Trinity Hall, Cambridge on 1 September 1862, aged 23, graduating B.A. in 1866, proceeding M.A. in 1870. Ordained deacon at Peterborough in 1865 and priest the following year and was curate at Market Overton, Rutland 1865-1866. Vicar of Edwardstone, Suffolk 1867-1896 and rector of Normanton St Matthew and Pilton, Rutland 1897-1902. A landscape painter and a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1890-1894 and exhibited from Edwardstone Vicarage in 1889 'The Lock, Thetford' and 'Flatford Bridge', in 1890 'Entrance to Wormingford Mere', 'Coast near St Ives, Cornwall', 'A Derelict Barge, River Stour, Flatford', 'Water Lane, Flatford', 'November in my Garden', 'The Orchard Steps' and 'Willie Lott's Cottage' and in 1893 'The Stour at Smallbridge', 'The Locks, Wiston Mill' and 'The Denes, Lowestoft'. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1891-1906 from The Vicarage, Priory Green, Edwardstone. In 1891, he was the vicar of Edwardstone living at the Vicarage with his 78-year-old mother Jane, also born at Limerick, with three domestic servants and in 1901, a 63-year-old clergyman of the church of England, living at Normanton St Matthew Rectory, Rutland with three servants. George Hampden de Clare Studdert died at 41 Boundary Road, London on 15 June 1911, aged 72, he was unmarried.
