MILLARD, Katie
Catherine J. Millard, known as Katie, was born at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1952, daughter of Frederick Harold Cleaford Millard (22 June 1920-2007), an engineer, and his wife Irene née Carter (15 March 1933-13 December 2008), who married in Lincolnshire in 1950. When Katie was aged 6, the family moved to Suffolk, and she was educated at The Silver Jubilee School for Girls, Bury St Edmund's and on leaving school at the age of 18, with a range of exams, worked as a secretary until taking a position as a dresser at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmund's. Katie then took a Foundation Year in Art at Ipswich School of Art followed by a further three years 1975-1978 at St Martin's School of Art, London, studying for a B.A. (hons) degree in Theatre and Costume. For many years Katie worked as a freelance on a variety of shows for the West End, television, and Glyndebourne Opera House. Returning to the countryside, Katie took a change in direction by teaching herself watercolour painting and since the 1980s has developed her own style, a distillation of the landscape, being drawn to the sea on which she has concentrated. Katie Millard has taken part in many exhibitions in East Anglia including in the two groups which she helped found 'Norfolk Arts' in Burnham Overy Staithe and Artworks East, Rougham, Bury St Edmund's. With the owner, George Agnew, she assisted in creating crafts at Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham, near Bury St Edmund's and as Kathryn Millard, she exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 75 King Edward Road, Ipswich in 1990, two paintings 'St David's' and 'Milford Haven'. She has exhibited at Holkham Gallery, The Ancient House/Holkham Estate, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk and The White Horse Hotel, Blakeney, Norfolk. Katie also runs art courses at her studio at Moat Cottage, Moat Lane, Rougham, Bury St Edmund's.
