WINTER, Francis John

1901 - 1996

Francis John Winter was born at 85 Sutherland Road, Edmonton, London on 19 October 1901, eldest of the three children of John Ernest Winter (12 October 1871-1944), a sanitary inspector for Edmonton Council, and his wife Elizabeth Mary née Francis (26 May 1869-26 February 1954) who married at Edmonton in 1897. In 1921 they were still living at 85 Sutherland Road, Edmonton, 49-year-old John Ernest, born at Edmonton, 51-year-old Elizabeth Mary, born at Wivenhoe, Essex, and children John Francis 19, a teaching art student, Eric 16 and Irene Marian 12, all born at Edmonton. Francis studied at Hornsey College of Art 1915-1926, where his tutors included John Henry Willis (1887-1989) and John Charles Moody (1884-1962), and at the London Day Training College for his Art Teacher's Diploma when his tutors included handwriting expert Marion Elaine Richardson (1892-1946). Winter returned to Hornsey and became senior lecturer and was President of the Society of Graphic Fine Art and a hon. retired Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere and lived in Buntingford, Hertfordshire and latterly in Suffolk and where Francis John Winter died on 7 February 1996.
