As Heather Slater she studied at The Simi Studio, Via Tripoli 1, Florence and at the Byam Shaw School of Art London, where her tutors included Bernard Dunstan (19 January 1920–20 August 2017), Diana Armfield (11 June 1920-) and Maurice de Sausmerez (20 October 1915–28 October 1969). Heather Slater married at Westminster, London in 1966, Robin Emley (16 August 1941-30 December 2004) and whilst her young family was growing, Heather illustrated two children's books and enjoyed designing wall coverings and fabric commissions. Moving to country life near Lavenham in Suffolk, Heather was encouraged into oil painting again and she joined Charlotte Steward and Tessa Spencer Pryse contemporaries at Byam Shaw School of Art, working in a studio at Sutton on Suffolk's Shotley peninsula. Here, Heather found the wonderful wide skies, coastal scenes and the unique light, simply captivating. So, along with her fellow painters, she began exhibiting mostly in and around Suffolk galleries. As Mrs Heather Emley she exhibited at the Royal Academy from Hall Farm, Preston St Mary, Lavenham, Suffolk in 1992 an untitled picture. She has also exhibited at Roy Petley Fine Art Gallery, Cork Street, London; The Osborne Studio Gallery, Knightsbridge, London; The Royal Ascot Racing Club, Ascot, Berkshire; New English Art Club; Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, London and elsewhere.
