DOUGAN, Barbara
As Barbara Taylor, she was born in Lancashire in April 1954. In 1975 she graduated from Leeds Arts University with a B.A. (hons) textile design/art history followed by a postgraduate diploma in Arts Management from University of London in 1978 and an M.A. fine art from Norwich University College for the Arts in 2011. Barbara Taylor married at Lewisham, London in 1986, David J. Dougan since when she has worked as Barbara Dougan. She had an extensive career in the visual arts including as the national Programme Director for Enquire and Director of Bury St Edmund's Art Gallery 1993-2004 and now works as a freelance artist, curator, and consultant. In 2019 her commissioned work was installed at Cambridge Leisure, site of The Junction and in 2020 she exhibited a new work Linnet in Sentinel Trees, as part of the Urban Tree Festival. She initiated a new annual project, when twelve artists are commissioned to make small works to place on the streets of Bury St Edmunds and writers were also commissioned to respond to each of the work. Barbara is the evaluator for the Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award which award is hosted by a gallery or museum and enables an artist to carry out participatory work with a particular user group, with a public outcome, the 2018 Award was hosted at The Turnpike in Leigh, with artist Lindsey Mendick (born 1987). Barbara Dougan is a former member of Suffolk Open Studios from Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk.
