LEWSEY, Tom
Thomas Leslie Warrand Lewsey was born at 3 Birch Grove, Acton, Middlesex on 30 November 1910, youngest child and only son of Leslie Charles Stanley Lewsey (20 July 1878-30 December 1949) and his wife Emma Delta née Jackson (26 March 1878-13 February 1958), who married at Brentford in 1900 and in 1939 Emma and Dorothea were living at Runton Croft, Snape, Suffolk. In 1911, Thomas was the newly born son, living at 3 Birch Grove, Acton with his parents, 32-year-old Leslie, manager of a firm of paper manufacturers, and 33-year-old Emma, with siblings Muriel Delta 9 and Dorothea Helen 3. Tom was educated at Mill Hill Public School and studied at St Martin's School of Art in London. Tom was a long-serving member of the Territorial Army and during the Second World War served with the Essex Regiment in both Sierra Leone and Normandy rising to the rank of Major in 1949 when living at Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. A marine artist and regular exhibitor at the Royal Society of Marine Artists also exhibiting at Fores Gallery, London; Richard Green Gallery, London; Royal Institute of Oil Painters and elsewhere and was honorary secretary of the Chelsea Arts Club in 1957. He spent extended periods in Suffolk, at Ipswich where his father died at 12 Kelvin Road in 1949 and at Aldeburgh from 1961 and where his sister Dorothea died at 19 Fawcett Road in 1990. Thomas Lewsey married at Hampstead, London in 1939, Diana Dadley (born 28 September 1921) and had two daughters and secondly at Epping, Essex in 1960, Jane Elizabeth Matthews (13 December 1913-1990) and they had two sons. He was of Turnstone, Purleigh, Chelmsford when he died at Cedars Hotel, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex on 18 November 1965. His painting of 'Bluebottle', a yacht owned by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, was presented to them at the Royal Burnham Yacht Club in 1948 and his painting of the 'Cutty Sark' was commissioned by the National Maritime Museum.
