PAUL, Cyril Lankester
Cyril Lankester Paul was born at Ipswich on 2 June 1891, eldest child of William Francis Paul, a grain merchant, and his second wife Ida Florence née Lankester (19 April 1866-25 June 1965) who married City Temple, Holborn, London on 18 Oct 1888, William's first wife was Jessie Eliza Mary née Springall (1853-1887), Cyril was a stepsister to Ida Jessie Paul. In 1901 Cyril was living at Orwell Lodge, Belstead Road, Ipswich with his parents, 51-year-old William and 34-year-old Ida, who was born at Stowmarket, Suffolk, three stepsiblings Ida Jessie 24, Hugh Francis 22 and Stuart 21, with siblings Marjorie Florence 7 and Audrey Frances 2, all born in Ipswich, and they retained seven indoor servants. A visitor at their home at this time was a 22-year-old Miss Helen Stokes Roberts, an artist painter, who was born at Kensington, London and may have been instructing some of the children in art. In 1911 Cyril was listed as a clerk in the tobacco trade, a visitor at Gothic House, Harrow-on-the Hill, the home of Dr. Sydney Hubert Arthur Lambert, M.D. As lieutenant Cyril Lankester Paul he married at St Mark, North Audley Street, London on 1 December 1915, Rachel Gwendolen Middleton Phillips (1 March 1895-30 October 1978) and by the end of the First World War was an acting major in the Royal Field Artillery. In 1921 a grain merchant in the family firm of R & W Paul of Ipswich living at 13 Broughton Road, Ipswich with his wife Rachel and children Rachel Middleton Lankester 3 and newly born John Middleton Lankester. In 1928, together with siblings Hugh Francis and Stuart, they purchased Corporation Farm with lands in Kirton and Falkenham in the Felixstowe Peninsula in Suffolk, at that time Cyril was living at Westerfield House, Ipswich and during his time at Ipswich he and his wife were area commissioners for the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides. Cyril Lankester Paul died at Tower House, High Street, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex on 6 June 1984.
