PHILLIPPS, Charles Burch
Charles Burch Phillipps was born at Geneva, Switzerland on 8 November 1835 and baptised at the British Chaplaincy six days later, son of Capt. Charles Phillipps (1797-22 January 1852) and his wife Maria Burch Smyth (1813-12 January 1871), second daughter of Joseph Burch Smyth of Stoke Hall, Ipswich, who married at Ipswich on 19 August 1834. In 1851, 54-year-old Charles, sen. was living at Barham Hall, Claydon, Ipswich with his 38-year-old wife and three of their four children, Lucy 11, Catherine 8 and Owen 3, all born at Claydon. Young Charles was educated at Sandhurst Military College graduating as a cadet to ensign without purchase, on 23 November 1852 rising to the rank of major in the 6th Royal Regiment in 1867. He married at St Mary's Church, Bury St Edmund's on 27 June 1865, Amy Florence Phillipps, née Colville, third daughter of Revd William Acton Colville (1804-20 April 1859) of Baylham Rectory, Suffolk. As Major Phillipps, an initial committee member of Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1874 and exhibited 1875-1883 from Barham Hall, Ipswich in 1875, seven paintings 'Marmon's Head', 'Blakenham Mill', 'Edinburgh Castle with Arthur's Seal', 'Ape's Hill, Barbary and Bay of Gibraltar', 'Barham Hall' and one untitled, in 1876 three works 'Lough Brin, Remy', 'Deserted Village' and 'Venetian Harbour, Corfu', in 1878 two works 'Teneriffe' and 'Blackwater Valley, County Kerry', in 1879 five works 'On the River Waveney, near Burgh', 'Sevastopol from 3rd Division Picquet 1855', 'Bournemouth looking West', 'Blackwater River, County Kerry' and 'Shrubland from the Long Covert' and was a regular exhibiter with his last posthumous works in 1883, four watercolours 'The Pitch Lake', 'Tombs at Scutari', 'Citadel of Corfu' and 'Vera Cruz'. His death is recorded in the 'Ipswich Journal' of 23 January 1883 'recently on a voyage to Australia...Major Charles Burch Phillipps of Barham in Suffolk' he was going to Australia for health reasons and died on 14 November 1882. His daughter was Efa Florence Phillipps and his eldest son Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Phillipps (1866-1919) married in 1900 Miss Clara Middleton Peniston, and his second son, Major Picton Phillipps, married in 1902, Gabrielle Monica Fonnereau of Christchurch Park, Ipswich.
