COSSART, David
Charles David Gradidge Cossart was born at Funchal, Madeira on 26 December 1942, son of Noel Cossart and his wife Kathleen Florence Gradidge (12 November 1905-12 April 1985), who married in the Cathedral of the Capital of Madeira, Funchal in 1936. The sixth generation of the family to own Cossart Gordon, & Co. Ltd, the oldest shippers of Madeira Wine which was established in 1745. Charles spent most of his working life in the wine trade, both in Portugal and in London and whilst working for Christie’s Wine Auctions, he passed the examination of the Institute of Masters of Wine, to be awarded the degree as Master of Wine. After retiring from his wine trade career, he worked with Graham Rust, the well-known painter of 'trompe l’oeil' decorative designs and large mural schemes. David Cossart spent a year at the Institut Supérieur de peinture Van der Kelen-Logelain in Brussels learning the art of painting 'faux-marbre' and 'faux-bois', imitating marble and wood, from where he gained their diploma. His work includes making water-colourwash & line mounts for drawings & designs and he continues making frames and mounts and is also a bookbinder and is a member of the Society of Book Binders also making boxes & folio cases and restoring and re-constituting leather-bound volumes. He has his workrooms at Old Rectory, Upper Somerton, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk.
