SHALDERS, Clara
Clara Jane Shalders was born at Saxmundham, Suffolk on 29 January 1859, one of the four daughters of Alfred Shalders (1827-9 January 1908) of Southampton, but was born at Worstead, Norfolk, who later kept a draper's shop, Old Waterloo House, on the Cornhill, Ipswich, and his wife Emily Taylor (1825-1902), youngest daughter of James Shepherd Taylor of Fishley Hall, Norfolk, who married at the Baptist Chapel, Worstead, Norfolk on 13 November 1856. Clara studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art 1880-1884 from where in 1884, she obtained her diploma in Advanced Art Examinations in Painting from Still Life and her Art Teacher's Certificate. In 1881, Clara was a drawing teacher, living at 16 Burlington Road, Ipswich with her 54-year-old father Alfred, now a draper trade valuer, his 55-year-old wife Emily and two sibling sisters, 20-year-old artist Emily Shalders and 17-year-old Lucy Mary Shalders, a scholar. In 1891, Clara was a 32-year-old painting and drawing teacher, still living with the family at 16 Burlington Road, Ipswich, but by 1901, a 41-year-old ladies' companion, living at Redclyffe, Bradford Street, Bocking, Braintree, Essex in the household of Frederick West, a brush manufacturer, and his family. In 1939, still unmarried, was living at St Wilfrids, Trimley, Suffolk. Clara Jane Shalders and was of St Wilfrids, The Avenue, Trimley when she died at Felixstowe Cottage Hospital on 5 March 1948, she was unmarried.
Not to be confused with Clara Josephine Shalders, died 1935 who was the daughter of artist George Shalders who was closely related to the same family.
