PHILLIPPS, Mary Lisle March
Mary Lisle March-Phillipps was born in the East Indies around 1859, daughter of Alfred Lisle March Phillipps (1825-3 September 1887), Bengal civil servant, and his second wife Mary Anna née Harrington, who married at St Paul, Agra, West Bengal, India on 14 April 1857, his first wife was Alicia Frances née Bushby (2 September 1825-30 November 1849), who married at Calcutta, India on 9 November 1848. In 1871, Mary was a 12-year-old, living at Hitcham Rectory, Hitcham, Suffolk, the home of her cousin, 50-year-old widower Alexander Ronald Grant, rector of Hitcham, and his family. By 1881 she was a 22-year-old, living at Hitcham Hall, Suffolk with her unmarried aunt, 57-year-old Florence March Phillipps, also in the household was Mary's father 56-year-old Alfred. In 1891, still living with her aunt at Hitcham Hall and as Miss March Phillips of Hitcham, she exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1882. Mary married at Greenwich, Middlesex in 1898, John Charles Scott (1 January 1866-23 January 1941) and in 1901 she was living at Quendon Street, Rickling, Saffron Walden, Essex with her 34-year-old husband, who was born at Little Waldingfield, Suffolk and their newly born son Allastar Lisle (1900-26 July 1941). Mary Lisle Scott died at The Old House, Hitcham, Suffolk on 25 March 1931, aged 72. Her maiden name is variously Phillipps and Phillips.
