GROUP 49 & RISING
With the age discrimination that existed within the art world, in 1999 artist Pam Winbolt decided on positive action and formed the Group 49 & Rising. Eight artists from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire made up the organisation, dedicated to promoting contemporary work by older artists and making it accessible to the public by regular exhibitions throughout East Anglia. The group established a reputation both regionally and internationally for work that was compelling, thematically diverse, and sometimes just purely idiosyncratic range of ideas in paint, textiles, word, bronze, mixed media and paper. The Group exhibited for charities and cultural exchange exhibitions, with exhibitions taking place both in the UK and in Germany. The original eight artists were: -
