MONGREDIEN, Jeannette

Jeannette Ann Catherine Mongrédien was born at 76 Grove Street, Liverpool on 19 February 1841, daughter of Augustus Mongrédien (17 March 1807-30 March 1888), merchant, landowner and author, and his wife Jeannette Anne née Lockerby (25 February 1814-1 December 1884), daughter of William Lockerby, mariner, of Toxteth Park, who married at Crescent Chapel, Liverpool on 1 May 1840. In 1871, Jeannette was a 29-year-old, living at Prospect Villa, High Street, Lewisham with her parents, 64-year-old Augustus and 54-year-old Jeannette, with siblings Adêle 28 and Augustus 26. As Miss Mongrédien, she exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1887 an oil, 'Tramps' which was noted as 'nicely painted with a judicious choice of colours' she also exhibited 'A Study of a Head' and 'The Abbey Ruins' also, together with her sister, exhibited at the Isle of Wight Art Society in 1889-1894 and at Cheltenham in 1898. In 1891, a 49-year-old, living on own means, at St Germans Road, Lewisham with her 48-year-old sister Adêle Maria Augusta and a single servant. Jeannette Ann Catherine Mongrédien died at 30a St Germains Road, Forest Hill, London on 21 May 1928, aged 87, she was unmarried. Although the Bury St Edmund's Art Exhibition was for 'local' artists, I have not found any notes of her living in Suffolk. Her sister Adêle Maria Augusta (1842-7 May 1929) was also a watercolour artist, using the human skeleton and several of the sister's anatomical works are in the Wellcome Collection.
