BLAKE, Marcus
Arthur Marcus Cecil Blake was born at Park Crescent, Broadwater, Worthing, Sussex on 11 August 1842 and baptised at Worthing on 15 September 1842, third child of Joseph Blake (c1802-28 May 1887), a fundholder, and his wife Elizabeth Mary Ann née Murray Macgregor (18 December 1816-29 March 1857), daughter of Major General Sir Evan Murray Macgregor, 2nd Bart. and granddaughter of the Duke of Athol, Elizabeth had been born in India and married at Broadwater Church, Worthing on 20 July 1837. In 1851, Arthur was an 8-year-old, living at Broadwater, Worthing with his parents, 48-year-old Joseph and 32-year-old Elizabeth, with siblings Walter Francis 12, Cecilia Elizabeth 10, Augustus Frederick 3, Robert 1 and newly born Mary Louisa and they retained six indoor servants. Marcus was educated at a private school kept by Charles Clarke at Angel Hill, St Mary's, Bury St Edmund's, where he was an 18-year-old boarder pupil in 1861 with several other boarding pupils. In 1871, a 28-year-old, living at 80 Guildhall Street, Bury St Edmund's with his 66-year-old widowed father Joseph, with siblings Augustus 24 and Robert 21, who were both born at Worthing, with three indoor servants. As Mr Marcus Blake, he exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's and West Suffolk Fine Art Society in 1882 and in 1891, 'living on own means', still at 80 Guildhall Street, with two indoor servants and was still there in 1901. He married at Lowestoft, Suffolk on 12 December 1908, Martha Mabel Hughes, second daughter of Clarke Hughes of Ross. Arthur Marcus Cecil Blake died at 80 Guildhall Street, Bury St Edmund's on 10 April 1919, aged 76.
