HUNTER, John (1816-1884)

John Hunter was born at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 7 April and baptised at the Whiting Street Chapel on 17 August 1816, son of John Hunter (3 June 1786-14 October 1859), a wine merchant, and his wife Ann née Ridley, who married at St James's Church, Bury St Edmund's on 13 July 1812. On the death of his father in 1859, he and his brother Arthur inherited the wine and spirit business at 17 Abbeygate Street which continued with John's son Ernest until Arthur's death in 1889. Young John married at Manchester in 1846, Jane Wood (1819-1868), and in 1861, a 45-year-old wine merchant, living at 22 Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmund's with his 41-year-old wife Jane, with five of their children Elizabeth Ann 11, born Manchester, Edith 8, Edmond Ernest 6, Flora Mabel 3 and newly born John William, all born at Bury St Edmund's. In 1881, a widower, living at 22 Northgate Street with children Edith 28, Flora Mabel 23, John William 19, Fanny Beatrice 17 and Margaret Kate 15, all born at Bury St Edmund's. John exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1882. John Hunter died at Bury St Edmund's on 8 February 1884.
