OAKES, Mary Margaret
As Mary Margaret Newsham, she was born at Manchester in 1835 and baptised on 15 May 1835, daughter of Henry [Harry] Newsham (20 April 1793-26 February 1869), proprietor of houses, and his wife Augusta Frances née Golborne (1804-1877) who married at St Oswald, Chester, Cheshire on 5 September 1826. Mary married at Grasmere, Wesmorland on 3 December 1861, Charles Joshua Tufnell Oakes (1834-3 July 1910), an army officer, and in 1871 they were living at Brigg Allans, Grasmere, Kendal, Westmorland, the home of her widowed mother. In 1881, a 44-year-old 'officer's wife', living at 84 Eastgate Street, Bury St Edmund's with her 46-year-old husband Charles and they retained three indoor servants. As Mrs Tyrell Oakes, she exhibited at the Bury St Edmunds Fine Art Society in 1882. Mary Margaret Oakes died at Sir Tristam Park Road, Camberley, Surrey on 16 July 1919.
