OAKES, Mary Margaret

1835 - 1919

As Mary Margaret Newsham, she was born at Manchester in 1835, daughter of Henry [Harry] Newsham (1793-1869), proprietor of houses, and his wife Augusta Frances née Golborne (1804-1877) who married at St Oswald, Chester, Cheshire on 5 September 1826. Mary married at Grasmere, Wesmorland on 3 December 1861, Charles Joshua Tufnell Oakes (1834-3 July 1910), an army officer, and in 1871 they were living at Brigg Allans, Grasmere, Kendal, Westmorland, the home of her widowed mother. In 1881, a 44 year old 'officer's wife', living at 84 East Gate Street, Bury St Edmund's with her 46 year old husband Charles J. T. with three indoor servants. As Mrs Tyrell Oakes, she exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's and West Suffolk Fine Art Society [q.v.]. She died at Sir Tristam, Park Road, Camberley, Surrey on 16 July 1919.
