KEMPLEY, Ken
Kenneth Frederick Kempley was born at Bakewell, Derbyshire in 1944, son of Frederick George Kempley (21 September 1911-20 January 1971), an upholsterer, and his wife Alice Eliza née Braham (22 March 1913-1966), who married at Shoreditch, London in 1936 and in 1939 were living at 12 Ravenscroft Street, Bethnal Green, London. Ken began his working life as a commercial artist in Fleet Street, London and about the year 2000 became a professional artist. A prolific self-taught artist known for his paintings of landscapes, seascapes, moor, and wetlands, working in acrylic and watercolour, stripping away geographical references creating drama and atmosphere found in remote locations. Ken married at Barking, Essex in 1967, Valerie Lethbridge and lived with his family at Harwich, Essex. Ken was a registered Society for All Artists (SAA) and Art Profile Demonstrator/Tutor in watercolour, acrylic and collage and regularly demonstrated on courses and workshops at Snape Maltings in Suffolk and to art clubs and societies throughout the East of England. He was a member of the Ipswich Art Club and the Colchester Art Society, also exhibited with several prestigious galleries in London and the Southeast including Snape Maltings Galleries, Suffolk; Shakespeare House Gallery, Dedham, Essex; Caxton Books and Gallery, 55 Connaught Avenue, Frinton-on-Sea and Cork Street Galleries, London. Ken’s paintings and are held in private collections in the USA, South Africa, Norway and the UK. Kenneth Frederick Kempley of Harwich, Essex died in hospital on 7 April 2020.
