WILLATS, Stephen
Stephen Arthur Willats was born at 90 Brunswick Road, Ealing, Middlesex in 1943, only child of Eric Arthur Willats (1919-31 March 2009), a librarian, and his wife Greta Ida Rita née Layman (2 August 1913-13 June 2009), who married at Brentford in 1940. Stephen studied at Ealing School of Art and was a visiting tutor at the Ipswich School of Art and whilst there lodged in the farmhouse of Judith Foster and her husband. Stephen Willats is a pioneer of conceptual art and since the early 1960s has created work concerned with extending the territory in which art functions. His work has involved interdisciplinary processes and theory from sociology, systems analysis, cybernetics, semiotics, and philosophy. Notable projects include 'Multiple Clothing' (1965–1998), 'The West London Social Resource Project'(1972), and the book 'Art and Social Function: Three Projects' (1976).
