WATLING, Walter Thomas
Walter Thomas Watling was born at St Johns Terrace, Ber Street, Norwich on 4 July 1885, eldest child of Walter Thomas Watling (1861-1 July 1934), an estate carpenter, and his wife Harriett Rachel née Pank (15 March 1861-17 April 1945), who married at Norwich in 1884. In 1901, Walter was a 15-year-old 'school teacher', living at 78 Olney Street, Heigham, Norwich with his parents, 39-year-old Walter and 40-year-old Harriett, with two sibling sisters, Ada May 8 and Dorothy Kate 6, and they were still there in 1911 with Walter now a Secondary teacher. A corporal in the Norfolk Regiment during the First World War and married firstly at Norwich on 2 August 1913, Ethel May Codling (1886-1928) and they lived at 78 Onley Street, Norwich, and secondly in 1929, Noel Alleyne Gowing née Moore (25 December 1894-1974). Walter was a painting tutor at Norwich School of Art and exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1933 from 'Tree Tops', Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, an oil 'Half Holiday'. In 1939, an art master in a Secondary School, living at 21 St Andrews Avenue, Blofield, Norwich with his wife Noel. A founder member of the Norwich Twenty Group in 1944. Walter Thomas Watling was of Treetops, St Andrew's Avenue, Thorpe-next-Norwich when he died at The Vale Hospital, Swainsthorpe, Norwich on 12 July 1956.
