SCHOFIELD, Sydney Elmer
Sydney Elmer Schofield was born at Southport, Lancashire on 22 August 1901, second son of Walter Elmer Schofield and his wife Murielle Charlotta née Redmayne (24 June 1869-15 June 1960), daughter of the very wealthy Ephraim Brownlow Redmayne (1836-1914) and Charlotta Taubman (1842-1931), Walter and Murielle had married at Liverpool on 10 January 1863. After a trip to Philadelphia, Sydney entered Bedford Grammar School in 1911 and went on to Christ's College, Cambridge where he obtained his degree in History. He then trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and travelled extensively in the USA, where his parents were born, and to France and Spain. Sydney took up farming, studying agriculture at Seale Hayne College, Devon but was also a landscape painter in oil. The family lived at Otley High House, Ipswich from at least 1925 and where Sydney spent a considerable time renovating and discovering the history of the property. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1933 from Otley High House, an oil 'Spring near Hale, Cornwall'. In 1937 the family purchased from the Duke of Leeds, Godolphin House, Kerrier, Cornwall and the following year they moved to Cornwall and in 1939 Sydney was a dairy farmer living at Godolphin House with his parents Walter and Muriel[sic] when Sydney took up painting again. Sydney married at Penzance, Cornwall in 1940, Lysbeth Mary Priscilla Lanyon (23 February 1917-29 June 2008), known as Mary, of the Red House, St Ives, and shortly afterwards, on 12 July 1940, was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and rarely painted thereafter but after the Second World War, again took up house restoration with Goldophin House. Sydney Elmer Schofield died at Godolphin House, Breage, Helston, Cornwall on 31 July 1983.
