GARNHAM, Christopher
Christopher Paul Garnham was born at Ipswich on 1 March 1958, son of Leonard Garnham and his wife Sylvia Joyce née Piper, who married at Ipswich in 1955. Chris studied at the Royal College of Art until 1982 and then trained as an illustrator, when working for trend-setting magazines such as ‘The Face’ and ‘Blitz’ and others and was voted Photographer of the Year in 1984. His portraits are of people in the art, music, fashion, and the literary world and include Gilbert and George, Paula Rego, Elvis Costello, Paul Simonon, Michael Clark, Theresa Russell, Kathy Acker and Nick Coleman. His training as an illustrator had given his work a distinctive and imaginative style, which at the time of his death, was beginning to adapt to fashion photography. Christopher Paul Garnham died on 20 August 1989 in the Marchioness river-boat accident on the River Thames, being described as an award-winning photographer and artist.
