WILSON, William Anthony

1814 - 1873

William Anthony Wilson, was born at Lambeth, Surrey on 7 August 1814, son of John (Jock) Wilson (1774-1855) a Scottish artist. William married at Marylebone, London on 15 April 1833, Clara Ann Foster (c1814-1865) and in 1844 was an insolvent petitioner of Granville Place, Bagnigge Wells Road (now Kings Cross Road), London a 'decorative painter'. In 1851, a 36 year old artist, lodging at 22 Surrey Place, St George the Martyr, Southwark, London with his 36 year old wife Clara with six of their children, William John 17, Clara Elizabeth 13, Hance 10, Emily Adelaide 8, Mariah Hawthorn 6 and Ernest Hance Hector 2, all born at different London addresses; the housekeeper at this address was 55 year old widower James Hance, a military officer on half pay. William exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, two works 'Mills and Amiens' and 'Edinburgh Castle'. In 1871, a 56 year old widower 'artist', living at 16 York Terrace, Islington, the home of his 28 year old married daughter Emily Adelaide Perry and her husband. William Anthony Wilson died at Marylebone, London on 7 February 1873. His son William John Wilson (24 December 1833–21 June 1909) was a British actor and theatre scenery painter spending most of his career in Australia.
