BARCLAY, William

1793 - 1859

William Barclay was baptised at St James's, Westminster, London on 3 November 1793, son of William Barclay, a miniature painter, of Tottenham, London, and his wife Isabella. He entered the Royal Academy Schools on 15 January 1820, under the title ‘William Barclay Jnr’. He established himself as a miniature painter, practising in London and Paris and made numerous copies from the works of the Italian masters in the Louvre. He exhibited portraits and some copies in water-colours at the Paris Salon 1831 as well as at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, when he had on show three watercolours 'A Girl Protecting her Dove', 'The Portrait' and 'A Girl with Spaniel Puppy'. Barclay's miniature of Mrs Bacon (1836) and two miniatures of unknown sitters are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. William Barclay died, possibly in Paris, in 1859.
