WILLIAMS, Edward

1781 - 1855

Edward Williams was born in London and baptised at St Mary, Lambeth, London on 13 October 1781, son of Edward William (c1755-c1797), an engraver, and his wife Mary née Ward, who married at St Pancras Old Church, London on 7 February 1778. A nephew and pupil of artist James Ward (1769-1859). Edward married at St Pancras Old Church on 12 February 1806, Ann Hildebrandt (1780-1851) and were the parents of the Williams family of painters who included some his six sons, who worked under differing surnames. Specialising in moonlight scenes and Thames views in oil and watercolour. He exhibited from 1811 until his death including at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, three works 'The Gipsey Home, Moonlight', 'Heath Scene, Evening' and 'The Ferry'. Edward Williams died at the Castelnau Villas, Barnes, Surrey on 24 June 1855, and buried in nearby Barnes Cemetery.

His children were
1. Edward Charles Williams was born on 10 July 1807 and died at Shepherds Bush, London on 25 July 1881. He exhibited at Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 four works 'An Old Roadside Inn', 'A Halt of Gipsies: Mid-day', 'At Byfleet, Surrey' and 'Punt Fishing'.

2. Henry John Boddington Williams was born at St Marylebone, London on 14 October 1811 and died in London on 11 April 1865 and buried at Barnes, Richmond-upon-Thames. As Henry John Boddington he exhibited at Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 three works 'Stoke Pages-Scene of Gray's Elegy', 'The Village Church' and 'The Village School Half-Holiday'.

3. George Augustus Williams was born Marylebone, London on 4 May 1814 and died at Barnes, London on 26 May 1901. He exhibited at Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 two works 'A Gray Day on the Thames' and 'Medmenham Ferry'.

4. Arthur Gilbert Frederick Williams born Newington Butts Road, Stoke Newington, London on 19 December 1819 and died at Croydon, Surrey on 21 April 1895. As Arthur Gilbert exhibited at Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 two works 'On the Thames, near Wargrave, Berkshire' and 'A River Scene, from Nature'.

5. Emily Ann Williams born 7 June 1816 and died at Wimbledon, Surrey on 16 Dec 1857, the mother of landscape painter Charles Leslie (1839–1886).

6. Sidney Richard Percy Williams born London in 1821 and died at Sutton, Surrey on 13 April 1886. As Sidney Richard Percy he exhibited at Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 three works 'A Quiet Vale', 'A Bright Day on the Thames' and 'View in Knowle Park, Kent'.
