Thomas Lound was born at Beeston, Norfolk and baptised at St Mary's Church, Sprowston, Norwich on 9 August 1801, son of Thomas Lound (c1771-17 March 1824), of Ketteringham, Norfolk and his wife Mary née Slipper (1770-1838), who married at Norwich on 23 February 1799. An amateur landscape painter, in watercolour, is believed to have been a pupil of John Sell Cotman (1782-1842) whose work he began by copying, as well as that of John Crome (1768-1821), Joseph Stannard (1797–1830) and David Cox (1783-1859). He joined the Norwich Society of Artists in 1820 and exhibited with them until 1833 and was actively involved in the establishment of the Norwich School of Design which was formally opened in 1846. He exhibited in London 1845-1859 including nineteen pictures at the Royal Academy but was unsuccessful as a candidate for membership of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1856. His subjects are mostly in Norfolk although he exhibited a view of Windermere in 1825 and one of Richmond, Yorkshire in 1854 and is also known to have visited Wales. He exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, three oil paintings 'A Boat-builders Yard', 'Old Tower, Great Yarmouth' and 'Draining Mill, Ely' and three watercolours 'Castle Rising Castle', 'Caistor Castle, Norfolk' and 'Ely, from the Meadows'. A keen amateur photographer and, as a committee member of the Norwich Photographic Society, showed five of his own photographs at its 1856 exhibition. They were all printed from wax paper negatives, two of Ely Cathedral, two of Bromholm(e) Priory and one of the Fish Market, Norwich. Following Thomas Lound’s death at Norwich on 18 January 1861, when he left the then substantial sum of some £3,000, Spelman the Norwich auctioneers sold his effects in the Exhibition Room at the Bazaar, St Andrew's, Norwich. In addition to pictures and drawings, the sale included a camera lucida, photographs and photographic equipment.
