LINTON, William

1791 - 1876

William Linton was born at Liverpool on 22 April and baptised at Renshaw Street Presbyterian Chapel (formerly in Benns Gardens), Liverpool on 6 May 1791, son of William Linton (1745-1796) and his wife Sarah née Pearce, who married on 17 November 1783, Sarah married secondly on 11 August 1796 Thomas Eskrigge. William was educated at Windermere and, at the age of 16, apprenticed to a Liverpool merchant, taking opportunities in making sketching visits to North Wales and the Lake District. William then came to London where he first exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and at the British Institute in 1817 and in 1824 assisted in the founding the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street and was its President in 1837. He toured Italy for eighteen months from 1828 and on his return married at Shillinglee Park, Kidford, Sussex, the seat of the Earl of Winterton, on 27 October 1831, Julia Adelina Eaton (1806–1867), daughter of Revd Thomas Swettenham and a niece to the Countess of Winterton. In 1840 he travelled through Italy, Sicily, Calabria and Greece, the drawings from this tour were exhibited at the New Society of Painters in Water Colours and he published ‘Sketches in Italy 1828-1829' (London,1832) and other works. He painted landscapes, classical and religious compositions and worked up his Italian and Greek sketches for many years after his visit. In 1851, a 59-year-old artist painter, living at Lodge Place, Marylebone, London with his 45-year-old wife Julia. He exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association in Ipswich 1850 'Oberwesel, on the Rhine'. William Linton died at Lodge Place, St John's Wood, London on 18 August 1876, aged 85. His remaining works were sold at Sotheby's on 15 February 1877.
