ALLEN, George William

George William Allen was born at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 5 December 1856 and baptised at St James's Church, Bury St Edmund's on 1 March 1857, second child of Daniel Allen, publican, and his wife Jane née Elsden, who married at Chevington, Suffolk in 1851. In 1861, George was a 4-year-old, living at 22 Cannon Place, Bury St Edmund's with his parents, 45-year-old Daniel and 36-year-old Jane, with siblings, Robert 8 and Harry 1 but by 1871 they had moved to the 'Edmund Head', Short Brackland Street, Bury St Edmund's with the addition of three more children, Arthur 8, William/Wilfred J. 5 and Annie M 1, all the children were born in Bury St Edmund's. In 1881, George was a 24-year-old artist, still living at the same address with his parents and five of his siblings. George married at Bury St Edmund's in 1885, Emily Jane Chandler (1861-1953) and their son was Basil Elsden Allen. George exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in September 1882 some local landscapes which included a highly commended oil painting 'View of Fornham'.
