CHADBURN, Mabel

1877 - 1958

As Mabel Harwood, she was born at Boston, Lincolnshire on 12 July 1877 and baptised at St Bololphs Church, Boston on 10 January 1878, tenth child of Robert James Harwood (2 April 1817-26 May 1897), an ironmonger, and his wife Martha née Mountain (1833-16 November 1912), who married at Islington, London in 1861. In 1891, Mabel was an 18-year-old scholar, living at Bank Street, Boston, Lincolnshire with her parents, 74-year-old Robert and 58-year-old Martha and two of her elder sisters Anne and Edith. In 1892 she passed her examinations at South Kensington School of Art in Model Drawing and in Freehand Drawing. She married at Chelsea, London in 1899, George Haworthe Chadburn. In 1901, a 23-year-old book illustrator, living at 26 Willow Road, Hampstead, London with her 30-year-old husband George and their daughter Joan Jessie, who married in 1932, Suffolk artist & architect Cecil Howard Lay. Mabel was the illustrator of 'Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes' (1893) and author & illustrator of 'Fairy Bird and Piggy-Wig' (1905). As Mrs Chadburn, she exhibited from Marsh Acres, Middleton, near Saxmundham, Suffolk at the Ipswich Art Club in 1932, two untitled woodcuts 212 & 226 and the following year had on show a wool-work picture 'Dorsetshire' and another wool picture. In 1939, a retired artist, living at Channel Cottage, Lower Drive, Dawlish, Devon with her retired artist husband George. Mabel Chadburn was of Arch House, Aldringham, Leiston, Suffolk when she died at Aldeburgh Cottage Hospital, Suffolk on 26 June 1958, aged 80.
