COLMER-STOCKER, Sophie
As Sophie F. Stocker, she was born at Newmarket, Suffolk in 1952, daughter of Anthony W. Stocker, a farmer, and his wife Sheila Frances Carey (1923-18 August 2010), who married at Bristol in 1948. Sophie studied on a foundation course at City and Guilds of London Art School, where she acquired skills in a variety of painting mediums and continued her training at Kingston College of Art, where she completed a three-year B.A. degree in graphic design, covering illustration, photography, lithography, and screen-printing. Following her studies, Sophie began working as a freelance artist in London, before moving to Suffolk in 1982. She married at Braintree, Essex in 1979, Charles Tyrwhitt Colmer and paints under the name of Sophie Colmer-Stocker. She began to focus her work on still-life, developing a skill in painting trompe l'oeil, these intriguing creations can be viewed in homes across the country, where over the years she has been commissioned to paint anything from shelves displaying beautiful antiques to windows looking onto a garden. Sophie spent some three years living in France continuing to paint trompe l’oeil, portraits, and still-life, but has now returned to live near Ipswich in Suffolk.
