BONE, Sir Muirhead

1876 - 1953

As David Muirhead Bone, he was born at Glasgow on 23 March 1876, son of David Drummond Bone (1841–1911), a journalist, and his wife Elizabeth Millar née Crawford (1847–1886). In 1881, David Muirhead was a 5-year-old, living at 9 Buckingham Terrace, Govan, Partick, Scotland with his parents, 39-year-old David and 34-year-old 'Lizzie', with siblings, Drummond 10, James R. C. 8, David William 6 and John H. 2, of his brothers James became a journalist and David became an author, mariner and was knighted. Muirhead Bone qualified as an architect before studying at the Glasgow School of Art and began printmaking in 1898 but is better known for his etchings and dry points. His subject matter was principally related to landscapes and architecture, which included urban construction and demolition sites, Gothic cathedrals, and Norman buildings. In 1901, Bone moved to London and became a member of the New English Art Club and held his first solo exhibition at the Carfax Gallery the following year, Bone was also a member of the Glasgow Art Club with whom he exhibited. A war artist in both the First and Second World Wars and an active member of both the British War Memorials Committee in the First World War and the War Artists' Advisory Committee in the Second. He married at Moss Side Wesleyan Chapel, Manchester on 31 August 1903, Gertrude Helena Dodd (1876-25 February 1962), elder daughter of Revd Benjamin Dodd and they had two sons. In 1922 they were living at Byways, Steep, Petersfield, Hampshire with their two sons Stephen and Gavin. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Greyflete Ferry, Hinsby, Oxford in 1932 'The Kirk, Isle of Whithorn, Scotland'. Bone received a knighthood in 1937 for services to art and served as a Trustee and on the committees of several institutions including the Tate, the National Gallery, and the Imperial War Museum. Sir David Muirhead Bone died at Oxford on 21 October 1953, aged 77. He signed his works 'Muirhead Bone' or sometimes 'Bone'.
