THEYRE, Margaret

1897 - 1977

As Margaret Isabel Clarence Smith, she was born at Dodford, Northamptonshire on 28 February 1897, youngest child of Revd Clarence Smith (1846-22 December 1917) and his wife Eliza Ellen Amy née Milne (1854-8 June 1918), who married at Lillington, Warwickshire on 30 June 1885. In 1901, Margaret was a 4-year-old, living at the Vicarage, Dodford, Daventry, Northamptonshire with her parents, 55-year-old Clarence and 46-year-old Eliza, with siblings Aimee Violet Evelyn 14 and Spencer Milne Clarence 5 and they kept five indoor staff. On 25 July 1911, when of Braunton, Devon, her father Clarence, on the death of his eldest brother Spencer Theyre Smith (1834-1911), changed the family name to Theyre and took over his brother's home in Holborn, London. Margaret studied at the Yellow Door School of Art and in 1927, exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 265 King's Road, Chelsea, London one painting, 'Ski-running' and in 1938 exhibited from the same address at the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art 'The White Cow', she also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery; the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; the Grosvenor Gallery, the Paris Salon and with the Association of Sussex Artists. In 1939, living on private means at Reeds Lane, Horsham, Sussex. Margaret Isabel Clarence Theyre died at New Found Out West, Reeds Lane, Southwater, Horsham, Sussex on 28 March 1977, she was unmarried. She signed her works 'M. Theyre', block letters underlined.
