JAMES, Sarah Spedding
As Sarah Spedding Smith, she was born at Islington, London on 2 December 1828, and baptised at St Vedast, Foster Lane, London on 4 March 1829, sixth of the eight children of Leny Deighton Smith (1792-9 January 1861), mill owner, and his wife Harriet née Spedding (born 1793), who married at St Mary Harefield, Middlesex on 25 April 1814. Sarah married at St Mary Lewisham on 25 August 1853, Revd Thomas James (1826-) and she was the mother of Henry Lionel James. A painter in watercolour of flowers and still life and a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1886-1899, exhibiting some 15 works, from The Vicarage, Washbrook, Ipswich in 1886 'Study of Fritillaries' and in 1887 from The Vicarage, Walberswick 'A Study of Cranes' Bill', 'Under the Apple Trees', ‘The Deserted Nest’ and 'A Study of Roses' she later exhibited from Everton, Liverpool. Sarah Spedding James died at West Derby, Liverpool in 1895, aged 64 [sic].
