CROMMELIN, Ethel Margaret
Ethel Margaret Crommelin, was born in London on 25 November 1860, daughter of Ainslie Garrett Crommelin, a civil engineer working in India, and his wife Julia née Hankin (1835-1908), who married at Marblen, India on 2 April 1856, and they had at least seven children. In 1881, Ethel was a 20-year-old, living at Iona, Anglesea Road, Ipswich, with her parents, 54-year-old Ainslie, now retired, and 46-year-old Julia, with three siblings, Amy Julie 18, Annie Constance 15, and son Frank Arden 12, all born in India, keeping two indoor servants. Ethel studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art where she was a prizewinner for her decorative art in 1884 and she had exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club from Iona, Anglesea Road in 1883, one picture 'Autumn' and two plaques 'Christmas Roses' and 'Clematis' and is noted as an exhibitor in 1885 but no pictures are listed. By 1891 the family had moved to 40 Linden Road, Bedford and, as Ethel Margaret Crommelin, was a spinster of 46 Spenser Road, Bedford when she died at Sunhurst Lawn Park, Bournemouth, Hampshire on 18 March 1911, she was unmarried. Her brother Charles Ainslie Russel Crommelin was an executor of her will.
The Ipswich Art Society has her listed in error as Miss Iona Crommelin, 'Iona' was the name of her home in Anglesea Road, Ipswich and the Miss Crommelin could be Amy Julia Crommelin below.
