JAMES, Grace
Grace Caroline Rhodes James was born at Goodnestone Parsonage, near Dover, Kent on 25 August 1859 and baptised on 28 September 1859, daughter of Revd Herbert James (26 October 1822-12 June 1909) and his wife, Mary Emily née Horton (4 April 1818-8 September 1898), daughter of Admiral Joshua Sydney Horton (1768-1836), Herbert and Mary Emily had married at Bosmere, Suffolk on 12 July 1854. Grace had three brothers, Sydney Rhodes (1855-1934) who was archdeacon of Dudley, Herbert Ellison (1857-1939) and the author Dr Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936). From 1865, Grace lived at the Rectory at Great Livermere, Suffolk which had been the childhood home of another eminent Suffolk antiquary, 'Honest' Tom Martin (1696–1771) of Palgrave. As Miss Grace James of Livermere, she exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1882, two oils 'Morah' and 'Fourscore' and was a regular exhibitor. In 1901, Grace was still living with her widowed father and her brother Montague at Livermere Rectory. Grace married at the Church of St Andrew, Undershaft, London on 29 March 1910, Revd Edward John Woodhouse (1869-16 August 1914), who had taken over as rector of Great Livermere from her father. In 1911 they were living at Livermere Rectory where her husband died in 1914. In 1939, Grace Caroline Woodhouse was a widow, living at Ivy House, Goodnestone, Eastry, Kent where she lived until her death at The Nursing Home, 11 Ethelbert Road, Canterbury on 17 May 1943, aged 83.
