CONDER, Thomas
Thomas Conder was born at Ipswich on 7 April 1810 and baptised at Tacket Street Meeting House, Ipswich on 20 May 1810, son of Thomas Conder (1775-3 June 1870), currier, and his wife Hannah née Garwood (1789-13 August 1857), who married at St Nicholas Church, Ipswich on 11 February 1808, he was a brother to John Garwood Conder. Apprenticed to his father and in 1831 purchased the business from him as a leather merchant. Joint secretary of the Ipswich Mechanics' Institute 1833-1836 and, like his brother, a member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1835, where he was tutored by Henry Davy. He married at Wix, Essex on 3 October 1833 Esther Everett, third daughter of Isaac Everett of Wix Lodge, Manningtree and a sister of his brother's wife, and they had ten children. In 1841, he was living at Brook Street, Ipswich with his wife and four small children and in 1862 he sold his leather business to two of his sons, Thomas Everett Conder (1834-1911) and Josiah Conder (1840-1920). An ardent nonconformist, Thomas was a teacher at Tacket Street Sunday School in 1823, aged just 13 and, on his retirement, continued as a deacon at that church until 1890. Thomas Conder died at his home at 45 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich on 20 January 1895, and his wife followed on 20 June 1898, aged 88.
