John Bawtree

John Andrew Bawtree was born at Cheam, Surrey on 1 November 1952, second of the three children of Harold Maurice Bawtree (20 July 1918-6 November 2006) and his wife Helen née Samson (1923-31 October 2013), who married at Marylebone, London in 1949. John was educated at Bradfield College, Berkshire 1966-1970, and studied at Kingston Polytechnic School of Architecture 1970-1973 again 1975-1977, and qualified as an architect before deciding to pursue a career as a full-time professional artist. He has lived and painted in Suffolk since 1977, holding his first London exhibition in 1978 and received a Greenshield Foundation Award. John has travelled extensively also diversifying into occasional architectural work, murals and illustration for TV as well as having many private commissions. Since 1978 he has had over forty solo exhibitions including at Piers Feetham Gallery, London; Melitensia Gallery, Malta; also, in Oman and the south of France. He also exhibits regularly locally at Woodbridge; Framlingham; Yoxford; Aldeburgh Cinema Gallery and at Peasenhall Art & Antique Gallery. a village where John has lived since 1984. His commissions include, from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a set of commemorative paintings of the old British Embassy in Oman; from the Devonport Dockyard, a painting of the former royal yacht Britannia; from the Mathaf Gallery in Knightsbridge, a set of watercolours of Oman; from ANZ Grindlays Bank for sixty five paintings for reproduction in their calendars and from Gulf Greetings in Dubai, who commenced a heritage series of cards with 36 of his paintings of the United Arab Emirates. His work is in private collections in England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Sudan, Oman, Dubai, Canada, Mexico, the USA and elsewhere.
