Petula Alice Stone was born at Kings Lynn, Norfolk in October 1953, daughter of Charles E. Stone and his wife Jean née Pitcher, who married at Kings Lynn in 1949. Following an art foundation course in Cambridge, Petula studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Leicester Polytechnic, completing her training with an Art Teacher’s Diploma from the University of Leicester. She then worked in London where she illustrated several children’s books for Hodder and Stoughton and several other publishers but, with a background and interest in design, made the natural progression into the field of illustration. Her illustrations for packaging range from Christmas puddings for Harrods to yogurt pots for Marks & Spencer and everything between. Her work has appeared in magazines, on television and on chinaware also on greetings cards, calendars, and prints and Petula has worked on a series of stamp issues of invertebrates for Alderney also for The Guernsey Post in the Channel Islands as well as for the Gibraltar Post. As Petula Scotcher, she married at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk in 2003, David Bruce Hussell (born 1951), a chartered town planner, but continues to work as Petula Stone. The natural environment, plants, and flowers are always a recurring theme of her work, and while she is known for her detailed botanical illustrations, she also paints in a 'loose and washy' watercolour painting style and in acrylics. A member of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists and of the Bury St Edmund's Art Society from Flint Cottage, 35 Middle Green, Bury St Edmund's and runs workshops in botanical illustration and flower painting at the University of Cambridge Botanic Garden and private classes in and around her Suffolk studio.
