INCE, Evelyn Grace

1886 - 1941

Evelyn Grace Ince was born on 1 March 1886 and baptised at Bhagalpur, Bengal, India on 25 March 1886, daughter of Revd John Cook Ince (1840-19 February 1922), a clergyman, and his wife Sarah Lydia née Heasberry (1888-), daughter of Benjamin Peach Heasberry, who married in Singapore on 17 April 1865. Evelyn studied at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art 1911–1916. In 1911, Evelyn was a 25-year-old artist in black & white, living at Worsley Road, Isle of Wight, Hampshire with her widowed father and three unmarried sisters, Gertrude 44, Mabel 41, an artist, and Alice 37, all born in India. Evelyn worked on the land 1916–1918 working at Blythburgh, Suffolk between the wars. An artist of landscapes, portraits, and flower subjects, in oil, watercolour and tempera, an illustrator of children's books and an art teacher. A member of the Royal Society of British Artists 1926 and an Associate of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1937. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1917 and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and New English Art Club and elsewhere from 6 Willow Road, Hampstead, London. In 1939, an artist painter on her own account living at 41 The Avenue, Letchworth, Hertfordshire with sisters Mabel and Alice. Evelyn Grace Ince was of White Lodge, Meadow Way, Letchworth when she died at Letchworth Hospital on 7 May 1941, she was unmarried. She signed her works 'Evelyn Ince' in block letters.
