LONG, Sue

1943 - ?

As Susan C. Hollyer, she was born at Witney, Oxfordshire in 1943, daughter of Stanley Hollyer (8 July 1909-30 December 1992), an assurance agent, and his wife Phyllis Irene née Haswell (14 April 1910-4 December 2004), who married at Hendon, Middlesex in 1935. Sue, as she was known, married at Colchester, Essex in 1966, John W. A. Long and paints under the name of Sue Long. Sue studied for a National Diploma in Design at Colchester School of Art 1960-1964 specialising painting, before completing an Art Teachers' Certificate at Leeds Arts University 1965. Becoming interested in etching, in 1980 she joined the print workshop at the Minories, Colchester and the Gainsborough's House Print Workshop, Sudbury, Suffolk before she studied printmaking at Chelsea School of Art in London. Her work is an exploration of the coastline, the rural and agricultural landscape, it's impact on the land and how people relate to these environments. Originally an etcher, she is now working as a wood engraver producing unique wood engraved collages, wood engravings and mixed media relief prints with her own studio. A former member of the Printmakers Council; the Society of Wood Engravers and a founder member of the Twelve Printmakers 12PM group before she moved to the South Coast. She has exhibited widely in open, mixed, and invited exhibitions including Firstsite, Colchester; Colchester Art Society and Galerie Lattermann, Germany.
