CHARLTON, Philippa Patricia
As Philippa Patricia Beazeley, she was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, in April 1910, daughter of Col. George Adam Beazeley (7 July 1870–8 May 1961) of the Royal Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and his wife Annette Cortlandt née Anderson (5 June 1879-1950), who married at Christ Church, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India on 26 October 1900. In 1911, Philippa was an 11-month-old baby, living at Sea Breeze, St Aubin, Jersey with her 31-year-old mother Annette, who was born at the Cape of Good Hope, and two elder sisters, Rozel Clinton 3 and Janet Martin 2, both born in India. Philippa married at Murree, India in 1940, Brigadier Max Anderson Charlton, O.B.E. (1918-2014) and she painted under the name of Philippa Charlton. They lived at Three Kings, St Mary's Road, Beccles, Suffolk, from where Philippa was a member and exhibitor at the Beccles Society of Artists 1977-1990 and she specialised in painting Suffolk barns. Philippa Patricia Charlton died at Beccles on 7 April 2014, her death announcement does not give her age (104) and her husband died at Beccles on 12 February 2015, aged 96. Their daughter Felicity (Abbott) was also an artist and another daughter Rozel and her husband, Captain William Swan, of the Royal Engineers, and their baby daughter were killed in the crash of the airliner 'St Catherine's Bay' at Jersey Airport on 4 November 1938.
