BROWNE, Gladys Evelyn
As Gladys Evelyn Underwood, she was born at Coventry Road, Bedworth, Foleshill, Warwickshire on 28 January 1900, only child of Frank Ernest Underwood (27 June 1864-24 December 1945), a grocer, and his wife Emily née Woods (21 January 1875-3 December 1962). By 1911 they had moved to 2 Bath Road, Kettering, Northamptonshire where in 1913 Gladys was admitted to Kettering High School and progressed to Howard College, Bromham Road, Bedford where artist Henry John Sylvester Stannard (12 July 1870–21 January 1951) was visiting Art Master and whilst at the school Gladys was taught watercolour painting. In 1921 they were living at Beamont Road, Reservoir Road, Kettering when Gladys was an assistant in her father's grocers' shop. Gladys married at Kettering in 1929 (Wilhelm) Johnston Browne (26 July 1901-2 September 1986) and they moved to Suffolk where in 1939 Gladys was living with her sister-in-law Kathleen Browne at 19 Cotmer Road, Lowestoft. Gladys was a member and an exhibitor at the Beccles Society of Artists. Gladys Evelyn Browne, was of 4 Station Road, Maiden Newton, Dorchester when she died on 18 Juyl 1987.
Wilhelm Johnston Browne was born at Barnby, Suffolk on 26 July 1901, only child of William Browne, a market gardener, and his wife Mary Jane. In 1911, Wilhelm was a 9-year-old living at Marsh Lane, North Cove, Suffolk with his 43-year-old father and 44-year-old mother, both born in North Suffolk. He registered with the Teacher's Registration Council Registers from Oulton Broad, Suffolk 1922-1931. Secretary of the Beccles Society of Artists and 'Master Painter' 1983-1986 although not an exhibitor. Wilhelm Johnston Browne died at 'Cockenzie', 24 Ashmans Road, Beccles on 2 September 1986. He was sometimes known as Brown or Johnston Browne.
