POPE, Jayne
Jayne L. Pope was born around 1957 and brought up on a boat on the River Hamble in Southampton before moving with her parents and brother to live in South Wales by the sea. She studied at Carmarthen College of Art, Wales 1974-1975 for her Foundation Certificate; Newport College of Art, Wales 1975-1978 for a B.A. (hons) Graphic Design and Book Illustration. She left college in the late seventies and worked as a graphic designer and studied life painting at Richmond Adult College, London 1985-1987 before going to live in Crete, where she set up a studio and travelled to other Greek islands also visiting Egypt, Turkey, Kenya, and Tanzania 1987-1993, with some paintings made during these travels being purchased by private collectors. Jayne then returned to London and for the next 24 years began to work as a specialist painter, painting murals, gold leafing, furniture restoration and working with interior designers but continued to do my own painting which she exhibited at Neal Street Gallery; Fischer Fine Art; Suzanne Ruggles Gallery, Kings Road, Chelsea and Cooling Galleries, Cork Street 1990-1994. She was a lecturer of still life painting at Harlow College, Essex and later taught still life painting at Wanstead Adult College, London 1996-2010. In 2010 she moved to Suffolk, painting full-time as a landscape painter with some still life interest. Jayne painted portraits, still life, life painting and murals to commission and worked on gilding and many specialist decorations for interior designers. Her Suffolk studio is set amongst the sweeping agricultural fields with sheep and majestic trees in Constable country when landscape became her obsession. She began taking figurative recognisable images away from her paintings until they became totally abstract using only shapes and colour as composition and began using acrylic gouache on canvas as the matt quality heightened the colour saturation. The main aim in her paintings is to create great composition, great colours, interesting and varied brushwork with the finished work looking unlaboured. She is a member of Suffolk Open Studios from Beechwood, Lady's Green, Ousden, near Newmarket, Suffolk.
