MONTAGU, Rachel Alice
As Rachel Alice Martin, she was born at Swaffham, Norfolk on 26 September 1907, daughter of William Harold Martin (1873-21 November 1922), a solicitor, and his wife Ethel Winter (7 September 1876-10 February 1970), daughter of Revd George Walter Winter, who married at SS Peter and Paul Church, Swaffham on 19 April 1906. In 1911, Rachel was a 3-year-old, living with her widowed grandmother, 76 year Harriet Piece Charity Winter, at Lydney House, Swaffham, together with Rachel's father, 37-year-old William and his other daughter newly born Ethel Elizabeth Martin. Rachel married at Swaffham on 8 May 1928, Captain Charles Edward Montagu (26 November 1900-11 March 1995), Royal Engineers, and they had two sons. Rachel painted under the name of Rachel Montagu and in 1939, Rachel and her husband were living at Hill House Gravel Hill, Nayland, Suffolk and later lived at Ballygate, Beccles, Suffolk where she often painted the Waveney River, local rural scenes, churches and still life and was a member and exhibitor at Beccles Society of Artists 1977-1990. Rachel Alice Montagu died at Beccles on 25 February 1996.
